Sailing On Bear Lake

There are several sail boats docked at the marinas around Bear Lake. My family and I have gone to Bear Lake for a mini vacation five or six times now, and this is only the second time we have seen any one sail on the lake. This little guy, had the brightest sail and quickly caught my eye. I will have to spend more than one day at the lake if I want to see several sail boats out at a time. I'll need a windy day and a super zoom lens to capture them from the shoreline. Another reason to get a super zoom!

That sail is sensational against the beautiful blues of the sky and water! Wow, I would have been a very happy photographer there too! Very cool pix!

You don't need a super zoom David, you need a sailboat to get you close enough! :-)

Awesome shots, the first one particularly caught my eye, I don't know why... maybe because it's the first one.

I agree with Darlin. How about a sailboat AND a super zoom?? Love the bright red, orange and yellow sail complimented by the blues of the lake and sky. We haven't been to Bear Lake this year. We've gone the other direction to Lake Powell.

I use to have a hobbie cat (orange crush) & sailed it at Bear Lake many times. Beautiful shots,my favorite being #2 with the clouds.

i like the vivid colour of the sail against the background.

Hi David,

i read the tutorial in a book i borrowed from our local library three months ago, sad to say i cant remember the title, the good news is i still remember how to do it.

this is how i did the smoke shot.
in addition to a camera, i also used:
-off camera flash
-incense stick
-black background
-2 pcs of black card
-tripod

my camera settings:

-exposure mode-manual
-shutter speed-1/200
-aperture-f9.5
-ISO-100
-focal length- 48mm

you can see my hardware setup here and the speedlight setup here

note: i think the key here is the 2 pcs of black cardboard that must be
attached to both sides of the speedlight to prevent light from falling on the background, btw the image must be taken in a dark room or at night with no or with minimal light.

>PP: it you just want to change the colour of the smoke, just adjust the hue level.

for the rainbow coloured smoke, on another layer I used the gradient tool with rainbow colour, soft light blending mode, flatten, and inverting the tone image to get the white background.
